I have to admit, I really didn’t have a clue that these master tool sets even existed. In fact, when a reader of our site emailed me and asked for my opinion on which of these tool sets I would recommend, I actually had to tell him that I didn’t know at the moment but I would do just a little bit of research and see if I could help him out. Now granted, that’s the old school way of doing things (I know, I’m showing my age again) but nowadays, we have major tool makers that provide individuals the ability to instantly equip themselves with master tool sets that can well be over 1000 pieces! To me, and I have a lot of tools mind you, you have to be pretty darn serious about your chosen profession when you start considering tool sets that are this huge. And if that is the case, then you need to be patted on the back because it shows that you have the dedication that it’s going to take to succeed and become a top notch professional at what you do.

So I guess the question for many of you is where do you start when you want to invest in these tool sets? Well, since I’ve never had the experience of buying a monster tool set like this all at one time, I had to make a few phone calls and check in with some friends. As I told you earlier, we all are pretty much old school tool fanatics, but one of my friends has a son in law who is a master mechanic at the local Chevy dealership here in town. He told me if anyone knew about master tool sets and how to go about investing in them, he would. After some small chit chat and some catching up, we agreed to pay a visit 2 days down the road. Naturally, he planned it so I would have to fork out for lunch! Oh yeah, for him, and the son in law!
But after spending some time with the young man, well, I guess he’s not that young, he is in his mid 30′s, I was quite impressed with the knowledge that he shared about tool sets, especially these master tool sets. Time after time he came back to the issue of quality. And we all know where I stand on that issue. So hearing it from someone else just reinforced my beliefs. If being in a profession requires tools to do your job, invest in quality because it means you’re investing in yourself. Enough said. What also was quite enlightening is that he made the statement that he wishes he would have had the ability to invest in one of those monster tool sets, yeah, the big 1000 pc tool sets when he was starting out. He firmly believes that if he had one of the quality master tool sets to start off with, he certainly would have been able to do more jobs for the dealership, hence, more money in his pocket.
After prodding him several times to name a certain brand, he shruggged and said it really didn’t matter. Again, he reemphasized the quality issue and said it’s actually to your advantage to having master tools sets where all, or at least the great majority of your tools are from one manufacturer. He pointed out that it’s a lot easier to get things handled when you need help on warranty issues. Seemed to make a lot of sense to me also.
So after thanking him for his time, and yes, picking up the tab for lunch I came away just a bit more knowledgeable about master tool sets. Hopefully you have also.
