Needless to say, I actually had never given any thought to having computer hand tools until my wife wanted a DVD drive installed in her desktop. As usual, my first reaction is “Ok Honey, I’ll get to it,” as this really wasn’t a task I was quite prepared for.

Hey, now don’t make fun here, if you want plumb walls, a new bathroom or a kitchen remodeled, I’m your guy. But when it comes time for opening up a computer and actually doing anything constructive, well, I’m just like many of you are and that’s scared to death of screwing something up.

So I first did a little research on computer hand tools to figure out exactly what I should buy.  And after I was done figuring out just what I might need, I made a decision to look for a complete set instead. Naturally because I didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of something and have to hunt up another tool. I just hate when that happens don’t you?

Another thing I learned is that not all computer tools are created equal. I guess just like in the tools I buy for a certain job, there are varying levels of quality. I also learned that you need to buy a set that has tools that are demagnetized. A lot of components inside your computer do not like magnetism. (I’m not a scientist so I hope that’s the right term.)

I finally settled on a set that had all sorts of goodies. Different types of screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, lots of sizes of allen wrenches and something I never would have thought of. Torx bits. And let me tell ya, the new DVD drive came with, you guessed it, torx type screws. I know I had to smile when I saw that. Oh yeah, I was prepared to tackle the job now and look like the proverbial hero. Besides, the fringe benefits of doing jobs for my wife just can’t be beat. Oh, and by the way, she absolutely loves her new drive!

So I guess you’re now expecting me to let you know if it was worth the investment in some new computer hand tools. For me it was. I’m no longer scared of having to open the case on any of our computers now to add new components or replace old ones. And since I now have a nice set of computer tools I’ll feel pretty darn confident the next time she asks me to do something.
